Heavy rains and landslides in Bangladesh, 90 people killed
Nearly 90 people have been killed in South-East Bangladesh in flash floods and landslides after three days of heavy rains. Many more people were still missing. According to officials it is the worst monsoon rainfall in years. Dhaka's flood forecasting centre warned that the situation may become worse in the coming days.
Rains have wrecked havoc in the three hill districts of Chittagong, Cox's Bazaar and Bandarban. Chittagong, the second largest city in the country was smashed with almost sixteen inches of rain. The army, police and the fire service personnel has been deployed to help with rescue efforts in the affected region. The water levels in major rivers are rising while some were flowing over the danger mark. Flood waters have caused mud banks and a railway bridge to collapse, burying houses and blocking roads.
