Flood in Assam, 27 people killed and 900,000 displaced
At least 27 people have been killed, 900,000 have been displace and many others went missing as flood situation in the North-East worsened. First wave of floods that hit Assam affected 21 districts. The flood water have also submerged 1,096 hectares of crop area and fresh areas of human habitation in the affected districts. The rescuers set up 1500 temporary shelters.
Affected districts are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Nalbari, Barpeta and Dhubri. In Kaziranga National Park heavy rains have also left large tracks under water. According to State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) the water levels in major rivers Brahmaputra and Burhidehing were rising at some points in upper Assam and flowing over the danger level.
