SRM University bags third place in US capsule design competition
Chennai-based private SRM University's students won third position at the Undergraduate Team Space Transportation Design Competition 2011-12 organised by Amercian Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. A team of eight undergraduate aeronautical engineering students of the university won a cash prize of USD 1,000 in the competition in which NASA asked students to present a conceptual design for the spacecraft as NASA isa planning to start space tourism by 2025.
They named their transportation vehicle NAVSHITIZ VAHAK (Sanskrit)— The Carrier Of New Horizon which has been designed to orbit at a distance of around 370 km from the Earth. SRM team won an award for the eco-friendly aircraft design at NASA Green Aviation competition last year. Virginia and California Universities bagged the first and second prizes respectively.
